Industry accounts for around 20 percent of global CO2-emissions. Roughly 50 percent of industrial emissions stem from the production of steel, cement and chemicals. What can be done to enable their transition to climate neutrality? Using green electricity and energy efficiency measures are key elements, but due to the high share of process-related emissions in these sectors, a sole focus on them will fall short of enabling a climate-neutral industry.

In the publication “Climate-Neutral Industry” Agora Energiewende and the Wuppertal Institute analysed potential technology and policy options with a focus on the German industry: What are low-carbon key technologies in the steel, chemical and cement sectors? When can they possibly reach market readiness? What regulatory framework and policy instruments are needed to bring them to the market?

On 14 April, Wido K. Witecka, Analyst at Agora Energiewende and one of the authors of the study, gave an insight into the results of the project. The one-hour webinar was held in English.
